Course Title: Maria Montessori - History and Philosophy
Clock Hours: 36 Contact Hours

Adult learners will examine research and explore Montessori philosophy and methodology through history and the life work of Dr. Maria Montessori. Continuous philosophical dialogue throughout the training will foster growth and connections between the child, materials, environment and the teacher in guiding a child’s physical, cognitive, psycho-social and creative development.

This child development course will explore various theories for the exploration and understanding of the physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual development of the young child. Aspects of educational psychology such as learning theories, motivation, classroom management, and assessment are also discussed. 

Course Title/Number: Practical Life & Everyday Living
Clock Hours: 40 Contact Hours

Practical Life exercises and materials will be presented, including the importance of their sequence. Learn how these lessons foster independence, concentration, coordination and order. Opportunities to practice with the materials and to design exercises for the classroom will be provided while modeling the grace and courtesy exercises.

Sensorial exercises and materials will be presented, including the importance of their sequence. Learn how these lessons aid the child’s exploration of the world through the senses while developing skills in classifying, sequencing and critical thinking.

Social Studies lessons and materials will be presented as a way to experience and explore the world. Emphasis will be placed on respect and understanding of other cultures.

This course will provide various classroom management techniques and procedures to better understand the role of a Montessori educator. Opportunities for utilizing these reflective strategies will be implemented in the Internship/Practicum placement. Additional professional resources and supportive community organizations will be explored.

Observational tools and techniques for practice and utilization will be explored during the internship placement phase. Opportunities for observing all components of a Montessori classroom will be provided in order to develop the practice of observational literacy using the C.O.R.E process.

Art, Music, and Movement will be presented as a way to experience and explore culture.  Philosophy, rationale, and appropriate exercises are presented with each subject.

This course will focus on the importance of creating parent partnerships for a child’s success. Communication strategies, family involvement opportunities and community partnerships are also addressed.

Course Title/Number: Early Childhood Practicum
​Clock Hours: 540 hours of instructional class time (minimum)

This is a supervised teaching/learning experience and a period of observation, internalization, and further study to bring together the theory and practice of Montessori education. This takes place over nine consecutive months for five days a week, four hours a day in approved internship sites.
